Qualified in London from the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine in 1986, then followed a surgical rotation in East Anglia before moving to Manchester for a research position in 1992. After gaining a Masters degree on endothelial cell seeding of autologous human tissue, he returned to the clinical sphere and finished his higher surgical training at Wigan, then specialist Vascular training at Manchester Royal Infirmary and South Manchester Withington Hospital.

Before taking up a Consultant post, he spent a year at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital in paediatric surgery.

Appointed in January 2000 as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Manchester Royal Infirmary, part of the Central Manchester and Manchester Childrens Hospital Trust, he has been involved in the development of Vascular Surgery in Manchester.
